THE LISTENING collection
The Forest Snake
An old roe deer antler already deep in weather and time.
Unlike the smoother fallow antlers I often work with, this piece arrived carrying the texture of the forest floor itself. The lower beam had darkened and hardened with age, the burrs becoming almost bark-like in places, as though the antler had begun returning itself slowly back into woodland.
As I sat with it, a snake began to emerge naturally through the existing lines and contours of the antler. Not forced into it, but revealed from within it.
For me, the snake has always felt connected to a different kind of listening. Not listening through distance or vision, but through contact. Through pressure, vibration, temperature, instinct, and the subtle movements that travel beneath the visible world.
The snake does not rush instead It listens with the whole body.
This piece became an exploration of that quieter sensory world. Of old forests, moss, roots, hidden pathways, and the intelligence that exists beneath language.
The upper antler has been carved smoother and lighter, whilst the lower beam still carries much of its original weathered texture and age. I wanted the piece to retain the feeling of having been found rather than manufactured. Something held between animal, land, object, and memory.
Hand carved roe deer antler.
One of a kind.
Approximate length: 21cms
Price £185 plus p&p or kerbside collection from Ludlow.
