There is something particularly beautiful about the roe deer. One of only two deer species indigenous to Britain, alongside the red deer, they have belonged to these lands since the ancient woodlands first returned after the last Ice Age.
A creature of the woodland edges, the quiet places and the thresholds between worlds. The roe deer moves almost unseen through the landscape, appearing for a fleeting moment before disappearing once more into the trees.
This beautiful roe buck comes from the Welsh–Herefordshire borderlands, a landscape of ancient woodland, rolling hills and wild places.
His skull has been carefully and slowly tended back to bone, retaining that beautiful, warm creamy colour of natural bone rather than being bleached to a stark white.
His antlers are wonderfully balanced, almost perfectly symmetrical, each one grown through the remarkable rhythm of the seasons. A crown grown, carried and eventually cast, only to begin again.
To hold the bones of a creature who once knew these lands so intimately feels like a gift. The one who moved through the woodland, knew the changing seasons, the scent of the earth and the familiar pathways of his territory.
For me, working with bone is never simply about creating something beautiful. It is about honouring the animal who once inhabited it, allowing something of their story to continue rather than be forgotten.
A beautiful piece of the wild, returned to bone.
