14" Fallow Deer Hair-On Drum | Mulberry Hoop | Triskele Handle
Birthed at the threshold of the Autumn Equinox, this drum belongs to that moment of balance when the year stands briefly between light and dark.
Equinox is a crossing place. A moment when day and night meet as equals before the land begins its long turning towards winter. A time of gathering in, of taking stock, of listening for what is ripening and what is ready to be laid down.
This drum came into being within that threshold. Her hide is from a wild fallow deer who roamed the Welsh–Herefordshire borderlands, carrying the beautiful natural markings of the animal still visible across the skin. I chose to work this hide hair-on, allowing more of the deer's physical presence to remain with the drum.
Hair-on drums have a sound quite unlike bare rawhide.
The hair softens the strike and absorbs some of the brighter overtones, creating something deeper and quieter, a low, muffled thunder rather than a sharp call. There is an earthiness to their voice; a sound that feels as though it travels downwards and inwards rather than out.
She is held upon a 14-inch mulberry hoop.
Mulberry feels particularly fitting for an Equinox drum. A tree associated with patience, abundance and the slow ripening of things, it carries the reminder that not everything should be hurried into fruit. There are seasons for growth, seasons for harvest, and seasons when life asks us simply to wait.
At her centre is a hand-woven triskele handle, the ancient threefold spiral, a symbol of movement, becoming and the continual turning of life through its cycles.
