Shadow
A soft, brain-tanned wild fallow deer hide from the Welsh/Herefordshire borderlands.
Shadow is a beautifully dark fallow, his deep coat scattered with soft spots that seem to illuminate the darkness of his skin.
He has been tanned slowly using the traditional brain-tanning process, worked by hand until soft and supple, and then gently smoked over oak and mugwort.
My work with hide is deeply rooted in relationship, with animal, plant and land. Nothing is simply an ingredient or a material.
And so, into the smoke I offered mugwort: the traveller’s plant, the dream tender, a plant long associated with thresholds, dreaming and the crossing between worlds. Oak brought its own medicine with strength, endurance and deep rootedness.
The smoke does more than preserve the hide. It becomes part of it. It settles into the fibres, carrying the scent of fire and plant, and completing the long transformation from skin into something that can live alongside us again.
Shadow is beautifully soft and supple, perfect as a ceremonial rug, laid beside the fire, or simply wrapped around your shoulders as a wild companion on cold days.
He has a small tear on the underside, which has been hand stitched and cannot be seen on the hair on side.
