Spirit Bird Drum

Born of the Welsh borderlands, where the old stories still cling to hill and hedgerow, this ceremonial frame drum has been crafted from the hide of a fallow doe deer, prepared by my own hands in prayer and ceremony, with reverence for the life that made it possible.

Her hide is stretched over a sixteen-inch oak frame  oak, the great sovereign tree of the Brythonic lands, long associated with strength, endurance, and sacred kingship. In the old traditions, oak stood as a guardian between worlds, a tree of threshold and deep-rooted wisdom, its branches reaching between Annwn, earth, and sky. To drum upon oak is to drum with the memory of the ancient forest beneath your hands.

The handle has been sculpted into the form of a Tree Spirit, as though emerging from the wood itself, entwined with copper and adorned with malachite, a  stone of the heart and the green blood of the earth, speaking to transformation, truth, and the living spirit held within the land.

Upon the drum face flies a Spirit Bird, hand painted beneath an 18ct gold moon and stars, evoking the soul’s flight between worlds and the old Brythonic understanding of birds as messengers of prophecy, fate, and enchantment.

From the back hang three feathers,  red kite, buzzard, and tawny owl  offered in honour of the sacred triads that weave throughout Welsh myth and Brythonic cosmology, where wisdom, fate, and sovereignty so often appear in threefold form.

The red kite carries the bright current of vision and becoming ,  the upward pull of spirit and the first call toward destiny.

The buzzard bears the watchful eye of guardianship and discernment, the circling witness who sees what others overlook.

The tawny owl, keeper of dusk and woodland shadow, holds the deep wisdom of silence, endings, and the mysteries that emerge only in darkness.

Together they form a triadic blessing of vision, discernment, and inner knowing ,  a reminder of the cyclical wisdom held within land, body, and soul.

This drum is a weaving of deer, oak, bird, feather, earth, and star ,  a prayer in hide and wood, shaped for those who walk with reverence for the old ways.

It is not simply an instrument, but a companion for journeying, ritual, trance, grief work, prayer, and remembrance. A vessel through which land, body, and spirit may speak once more in the same tongue.

Made slowly. Made ceremonially. Made in devotion to the living memory of these lands.

the drum comes with a beautiful drum hanging hook so it can be displayed as both art & threshold keeper

£585 plus P&P, or kerbside collection if you are local to Ludlow.
