Fire Starter – A Beltane Rattle

She was born in the season of fire, as the veil between worlds thinned and the land blushed green and gold with Beltane’s kiss. The air was thick with the scent of blossom and smoke, and the fires—old as time—leapt skyward in celebration of life, passion, and renewal. It was in this sacred threshold that the rattle came to life.

Her body was shaped from the hide of red deer—an animal of the wild heart, whose spirit runs swift between earth and sky. The hide was softened by hand and stretched with prayer, each movement a reverent offering to the forest, to the ancestors, to the spirit of the deer itself. The drum of her belly, when struck by air or hand, would echo not just sound—but story.

Painted upon her face are phoenix feathers, sweeping like flames. Though no bird gave them, their image burns with truth: the mythic phoenix, dying in sacred fire only to rise again, blazing with new life. Through these painted symbols, she sings of transformation, of falling into ash and rising whole, shining, fearless. She carries the fire of the soul.

Inside, she is filled with stones that speak: Red Carnelian,  glowing with the embers of courage and blood-heat vitality, pulses with creative fire and sacred passion. Beside it lies Clear Quartz, a vessel of light that amplifies all that it touches—holding intention, memory, and healing in crystalline purity. Together, they dance within her, stirring energy like sparks within flame.

She is held by bone—an old, whispering remnant of a roe deer’s leg. The bone, once running beneath fur and muscle, now bears the wisdom of endings and endurance. It grounds her, connects her to the quiet power of the earth and the ancestors, whose spirits walk just beyond the veil.

At her throat, a collar of brain-tanned black fallow deer, its supple hide imbued with the rich darkness of the forest, clung close like a whisper of ancient rites. The black fallow deer, rare and shadow-silent, was long regarded by woodland tribes as a guardian of thresholds, a creature that moved between worlds. In many traditions, its dark coat symbolized mystery, protection, and the unseen—an embodiment of the liminal, where spirit and flesh brush shoulders. Wearing its hide was more than adornment; it was a pact with the spirit of the hunt, a tribute to the animal’s grace and quiet power, and a sign of the wearer’s passage into deeper, hidden knowledge.

And so, this rattle—this Fire Starter was not merely crafted, but birthed.  A being of Beltane flame, of forest lore, of rebirth and wild grace. She is a tool of awakening, of calling spirit and stirring soul. She is for the one who dares to ignite the inner fire, to shed the old skin, to step boldly into the dance of transformation.

To hold her is to carry the flame forward.

She is in the shop - £92.50 plus p&p
