The Whale & The Deer Listening Peice

THE LISTENING Collection
The Whale & The Deer

This is the largest wild fallow deer antler I have worked with to date. It was one of two naturally shed antlers found deep in the woods. Measuring close to 60cm long, it carries the weight and shape of an older stag within it and still carries the edge of green moss on the burr that once held this antler upon this great being.

When I first held it, I knew it wanted to become something that spoke not only of the land, but also of the sea, and as I traced the contours and natural lines, a great blue whale appeared.

The meeting of deer and whale may seem unlikely at first, yet to me they feel deeply connected. One walks the forest floor with quiet attentiveness, whilst the other moves through the dark body of the ocean carrying songs older than memory. Both are ancient beings, and both listen through vibration, pressure, and currents unseen.

I have always felt the sea as the great womb of the world. The place life first emerged from. The body that still holds the rhythm of the earth itself. Her tides, the moon pull, the pulse beneath all living things.

And the whale. To me they are the Keeper of depth, resonance and the deep unseen.

Blue whales carry sound across entire oceans. Their voices travel through water in ways we still barely understand, communicating through vast distances beneath the surface of the world. There is something about them that feels primordial to me. Like they belong to a time before separation. Before humans imagined themselves apart from the living world.

The deer too carries an ancient intelligence. A listening born through sensitivity, instinct, and relationship with land. Antler itself feels like a map of attention and, in many ways, a map of the world.

This piece became a conversation between those worlds.

Land and sea, Forest and ocean, Bone and water, Stillness and song.

There also feels to me something deeply archetypal within the meeting of whale and stag. The whale carrying the ancient matriarchal body of the sea, memory, depth, and creation itself. The stag carrying the old masculine presence of the forest, alert and listening beneath the trees.

Unlike some of my smaller Listening Pieces, this one does not feel made to travel in a pocket or to be carried throughout the day. It feels more like something to sit beside. Something to place on an altar, near a bed, beside a window, or in a quiet corner of the home.

A piece to return to, to listen with.

Not because it speaks loudly, but because it asks something slower of us. There feels much wisdom held within this piece, and much it wishes to share. The stories that still move through tide, vibration, birdsong, body, dream, and the old animal intelligences still living quietly beneath modern life.

Cleansed with local herbs and gently met with beeswax finish this peice is £480, plus P&P. Or kerbside collection if you are local to Ludlow.
