Forest Womb Belt

Woven slowly on my backstrap loom, with one end of the loom held around my own body and the other anchored to a living tree, every thread has been woven within relationship. The tree holds the tension. My body carries the rhythm. Between us, the belt slowly comes into being.

This is one of humanity's oldest forms of weaving, where the body itself becomes part of the loom. It is slow work that cannot be rushed, asking for presence, patience and attention.

The warp threads are made from 100% linen, a fibre long associated with purity, endurance and protection. Linen has accompanied people for thousands of years, valued not only for its remarkable strength but also for the way it softens with time and use, becoming ever more beautiful through relationship.

Woven through this linen foundation is 100% wool bringing warmth, softness and life to the cloth and recycled sari silk. Wool has sheltered us for millennia, carrying something of the quiet generosity of the animals who gift it. Together, the linen and wool create a belt that feels both grounded and comforting against the body.

For me, womb belts are far more than adornment.

Across many cultures, the womb has been understood as a place of creation, intuition, memory and deep knowing. Whether or not we have physically carried children, the womb can also be understood as the place from which we birth our lives, our creativity, our grief and our becoming.

To wrap a woven belt around this place is to offer a gentle embrace. A reminder to return to yourself. To soften. To remember the wisdom already held within your own body.

The colours of this belt emerged as woodland.

Deep greens of moss. Soft ferns unfurling beneath the canopy. The rich browns of the forest floor.

In Celtic folklore, the fern is often associated with hidden wisdom, protection and the unseen world. Although its flowers were said never to be witnessed, old stories tell that those fortunate enough to find the mythical fern seed would gain insight into hidden things. It reminds us that some transformations happen quietly, beneath the surface, long before they become visible.

Moss belongs to the oldest storytellers of the forest. Growing slowly over fallen wood and ancient stone, it speaks of gentleness rather than urgency. It reminds us that life continually returns to places we imagine are finished, wrapping what has weathered in softness and inviting us to slow our own pace.

The forest itself has long been understood as a threshold in European folklore, a place where the familiar falls away and something older begins to speak. It is where we lose our certainty and, perhaps, remember ourselves.

This belt carries something of that feeling.
