Elen of the Ways seemed to have captured my attention as I pulled this hide from the waters beneath the unfolding buds of the ancient apple tree. On these isles, Elen is venerated as the oldest goddess, known as the Grail Bearer and the Keeper of the Ways. She is believed to interweave sacred, sexual energy that awakens the land from its slumber, heralding new life. Standing here beneath these branches, I feel a stirring within my bones. Indeed, reindeer hold significant roles in the myths and folklore of many cultures. In Sami mythology, a divine reindeer created the world. In Norse mythology, reindeer were sacred to the goddess Freyja, symbolizing love, beauty, and fertility.
Elen is a guide, a pathfinder, and it seems her energies have been woven by her own hands into the fabric of this hide, softened by the nurturing embrace of wild waters.
This reindeer hide, prepared by the Sami people, possesses a beautiful duality; it feels delicate yet exhibits strength, resonating powerfully within the heart space.
Reindeer speak to me of magic. They enable us to remain grounded in this reality while extending into the mystical realms where our dreams can thrive and expand, illuminating our path like a beacon in the darkness. They traverse vast distances, led by the Matriarch, making them the perfect companions for journeying into the unseen realm, blessed with their clarity of mind and liberating energy.
The reindeer call us back, urging us to follow our inner compass and collaborate with them on fulfilling our soul's purpose in this lifetime.
The birchwood hoop, upon which this hide is stretched, symbolizes regeneration, embodying the spirit of a pioneer tree, traditionally used for the Witch’s besom, Beltane fires and Maypoles, and Yule logs.
Referred to as the "White Lady of the Woods," the Birch tree is a symbol of strength and elegance. Known as one of the earliest plants to leaf out in spring, it has become a representation of rebirth. The Birch tree holds significant value in Celtic, European, and Native American folklore and is connected to the Norse rune Berkana, as well as Beith, the initial character of the Ogham script.
