River Rattle – Teferidad’s Song
A beautiful Shamanic Rattle, crafted from Red Deer Hide and held on a stick I collected from the river. Inside is a bend of Fluorite, tiny river shells and Clear quartz.
I have hand painted an otter on the front, diving to collect the hag stone that was gifted to me by the flow.

River Rattle –Teferidad’s Song
Crafted in deep reverence to the waters that shape our land and spirit, this sacred rattle carries the living breath of the River Teme—an ancient waterway that remembers everything.
The rattle’s hide has been bathed in her chalky waters, absorbing the subtle imprint of place: the silent glide of otters through dusk currents, the rhythmic hush of water over stone, the still gaze of herons, and deer drinking in the half-light of dawn. Butterflies flicker and Mayflies rise—fragile, luminous messengers of impermanence and renewal.
Its handle is a river-smooth branch, offered freely by the flow. This is not wood that was taken—it is wood that was gifted, shaped by time and water’s tender persistence. It connects you to the River Teme, whose waters carry the presence of **Teferidad**, a lesser-known but potent water goddess. She is a deity of grace, transformation, and quiet strength—her voice is the current, her wisdom found in still pools and rushing channels alike. She governs the hidden cycles, the deep emotional tides, and the sacred act of letting go.
Within the rattle’s head, a powerful blend stirs with every shake:
Fluorite – For clarity, heightened intuition, and spiritual connection, it mirrors the river’s ability to reveal what lies beneath.
Tiny river shells– Carriers of ancient water songs, they hold the memory of tides, moon-pulled and timeless.
Quartz – The amplifier, weaving intention and healing through vibration, echoing the river’s endless movement.
Adorning the hide is the sacred otter, a creature of joy, curiosity, and flow. In Celtic and Northern European mythology, otters are guardians of the liminal—moving freely between land and water, between this world and the unseen. They are keepers of memory, protectors of sacred play, and guides through transformation. The otter on this rattle flows toward a hag stone, naturally pierced and gathered from the riverbank.
The hag stone—also called an adder stone or witch stone—is a talisman of great power. Formed by the persistent caress of water and time, it is said to allow the bearer to see beyond the veil: into the realms of fae, spirit, and truth. Folklore holds that looking through its hole grants vision of hidden things, while hanging it wards off negative energies, curses, and ill intent. As such, it is both a portal and a protector—a sacred eye watching over your practice.
This rattle is not merely an instrument; it is a river’s breath a vessel for prayer, and a bridge to the divine. It carries the voice of Teferidad, the laughter of otters, and the ancient heartbeat of flowing water.
Use it in ceremony, dreamwork, meditation, or as a talisman upon your altar. Let it remind you of your own fluidity—your ability to shift, adapt, and find sacred stillness within movement.
If you feel the pull, it may be that the river is calling you home.
