Imbolc Drum Birthing

Imbolc Drum Birthing Ceremony - Tuesday 3rd February 2026 - Ludlow, Herefordshire (Welsh Borderlands)

We gather on Tuesday 3rd February, in the wild hills of Ludlow, Herefordshire, where the Welsh Borderlands breathe with the first stirrings of spring.

As the Earth begins to wake beneath the soil and the fire of Imbolc kindles in hearth and heart, we gather to birth our drums, vessels of rhythm, prayer, and renewal.

This is the season of quickening and return, when Brigid’s flame lights the way for new beginnings. A time to craft not just an instrument, but a living ally: one that carries your song, spirit, and devotion into the year ahead.

This gathering will be ceremonial, intimate, and heart-led, an invitation to listen deeply to the whispers of hide and hoop, and to the life that wishes to be sung through your hands.

The Magic of the Drum

Across time and culture, the drum has been revered as the heartbeat of the Earth, a bridge between the seen and unseen, a keeper of rhythm and life. Its steady pulse guides us into presence, awakens memory in the bones, and calls forth the wild wisdom within.

The hides we will be working with are hand-prepared by me from Fallow Deer who roam freely across these lands. Each hide has been tended in deep reverence, a slow, sacred act of devotion, honouring the life given and the ancient lineage of craft, prayer, and relationship with the land.

With Special Guest: Doug from Buckskin & Bones

Joining this Imbolc ceremony is Doug from Buckskin & Bones, a rare opportunity to learn from a craftsperson steeped in the old ways of hide work.

Throughout the day, Doug will:

  • show us the alchemy of transforming fresh deer hides into rawhide,

  • share the hidden stages of hide preparation that are rarely seen,

  • bring his deep knowledge of traditional tanning and ancestral hide craft.

It is an honour to have him with us,  not only for his skill, but for the reverence and integrity he brings to this work. His presence weaves an unbroken thread from animal to material to drum: a full-circle witnessing of life becoming instrument.

What the Day Will Include

Opening Ceremony
We begin by opening sacred space and honouring the life of the deer and the tree that gifted the hoop. Through prayer, song, and guided ritual, we awaken the Drum Maker within,

calling forth ancestral memory and the creative fire of Imbolc.

Crafting Your Drum
Working with a 14-inch wooden hoop and your chosen deer hide, you’ll enter into sacred dialogue with the materials ,stretching, weaving, and birthing your drum in ceremony. Each step will be guided with presence and reverence.

Awakening Ceremony
We close with a gentle awakening of your drum, welcoming its spirit through journey and sound,  listening for its name, message, and medicine as you step into a new season.
